Guess what I did this weekend

I was on a train. For two whole days! THE EMPIRE BUILDER (Amtrak sure know how to name a route) between Portland OR and Chicago IL. I met a one-armed man, a nice elderly couple with a son on an army base, a truck drive who didn't want to pay his taxes, a mennonite couple, a professor, a gay dining car waiter, a lounge car attendant named Spiro (Greek), and loads of other people.

I also saw lots of lovely scenery. And took many, many photos. All that remains now is... choosing how many to upload.   ...    See you in a couple of weeks :-)

Smalltown Oregon - don't ever change

I finally got round to moving my photos from my camera to my (borrowed) computer...mostly because I was afraid I would suddenly run out of space at exactly the moment when a Kodak Moment presented itself. Nothing like anxiety to get me moving...

Last weekend I rented a car and went for a little drive (around 300 miles in one day). One of my first stops was in Corbett which has a country store that is pretty much anything you could dream of. It seemed there was nothing they didn't have and it was also a place for the locals to hang out (seating + magazines provided)  I loved it so much I forgot my camera when I paid, but fortunately they're honest folks :-)

Driving out of town, I saw this - and considered coming back a few days later...

Town meeting :-)

It's aliiiiiive...

I'm still here. "Here" is just a tad further West than it normally is. And out West, they work longer hours in general - and I have in particular, because otherwise it can be difficult to keep up with The Office back home.

The Office whisked me off to the US on short notice, leaving Boyfriend and Guinea Pig behind. They're both in good health and holding the fort without me, by the way.

People told me to take lots of photos, which I've tried to - but do you have any idea how difficult it is to take pictures when you're driving without putting yourself, the rental car or other people at risk? So, there are pictures, but I haven't actually seen them yet and I'll bet you anything that 90% of them will be blurred and Unsuitable for Upload. We'll see. I also need to go hunting for Pixie Stix and Twizzlers, and does anyone want some canola oil?

During the week, it's all been work-work-work, 830am to 5-6pm, and sometimes in the evenings as well. So, I am very behind on sightseeing, but it is kind of nice to be here and not be a tourist if you know what I mean.

Status update: rain today. All day. But still no glittering vampires to be seen.
